Ref 4 uses a calibrated microphone that measures a specific sound pattern at many different points in the listening position to reach an understanding of frequency response in the room. It won't have the same effect as a professionally sound treated studio or listening environment, but it will do what many home studio treatments aim to do: improve the sound at the main listening position. Room correction software, or at least specifically Sonarworks Ref 4 - as that's all I can speak to - absolutely does this.

It has several filter options for either low latency or linear phase response.
It also runs as both a VST you can drop as the last part of your DAW's master channel signal chain, and/or as the soundcard software on your computer. I'm not familiar with any of the other programs, but Reference 4 is also cool because they have profiles for different headphones as well (and can sell you a pretty expensive pair of many popular headphones that are individually calibrated instead of using generic curves for that model), and you can make as many speaker profiles as you want, so if you have multiple sets of monitors you can tune setup independently. But it proved itself after listening back on a bunch of different systems and situations Kind of uncanny too when I bypass the software and listen to the raw sound and how different so many of the frequency ranges sound. So I can learn to like or be used to any type of sound setup, but the big difference it has had is that my mix translation to different sound systems has been pretty accurate. Sure, this type of software and methodology definitely has pros and cons, but so does treating a room, especially if you don't go all the way, or don't get it quite right, and there are many variables involved, and not all parts of room treatment can be piecemealed.īut really I think the point of this type of software, and room correction really is specifically for mix translation - yes it definitely did improve the sound I was hearing, but I work with abstract electronic noises, so I just continue to tweak the timbre until I'm happy, and if this were the only sound system I'd ever listen on, I'd just compose to it. This has been working well, and I have no complaints. The place where I'm currently living and have my studio set up in has some weird standing wave stuff in the bass frequencies that I can't seem to fully do away with by adjusting my position, and room treatment isn't an option really.

Not sure I would have gotten it if it wasn't on sale, but now that I have it and have used it, I would/will pay full price.
I bought Sonarworks Reference 4, along with their mic, during the holiday season while it was one sale, and I think it's great.
